An enthusiastic group of over 30 women swimmers took part in the second Heath swimathon, later renamed “Chatathon”, on Sunday 21 September 2014. Jane Smith (lifeguard) organised the event, and many KLPA members took part.
This marked the Autumn Equinox and the walking/swimming expedition was a more relaxed response to the recent Heath Duathlon of 31 August 2014. The weather was generally kind, being sunny if a little breezy. We met outside the Parliament Hill Lido for 9 a.m. and swam a length or two at the spacious Art Deco facility, which has interesting light effects on the water due to the metal lining of the pool.
A short walk up to the Parliament Hill viewpoint and onwards to the Mixed Pond followed. It was the last day for public access to the Mixed Pond before it closes for the winter season, to be taken over by the Winter Swimmers’ club until next May.
This pond is a little smaller than the Ladies’ Pond and not so secluded, as it is overlooked by a public footpath at one end. We were made welcome by the Mixed Pond regulars and lifeguards as we swam a circuit of the pond. Finally we all arrived, a little noisily, back at the Ladies Pond for our third swim followed by a fantastic breakfast spread. Home baked cakes and savouries had been contributed by the participants, in addition to a pan of melted chocolate to dip strawberries in. This feast on the lower meadow was an indulgent finale to a thoroughly enjoyable morning!
