PETITION AGAINST THE DAMS

17/7/2014

1 Comment

 An on-line petition has now been set up on the 38 Degrees website <https://you.38degrees.org.uk/p/damnonsense> , opposing the dam works on Hampstead Heath and calling on Camden Council to reject the planning application from the city of London.

Please click on the link and sign.

BACKGROUND AND MORE INFORMATION:
The proposed works specify massive dams, spillways, concrete walls and embankments. They include:

·         Construction of a huge 40m wide by 5.6m high embankment in the Catchpit Valley;

·         Construction of a massive 2.5 m dam at end of the Model Boating Pond;

·         Felling at least 160 trees;

·         Taking 2 years to complete;

·         Estimated costs of at least £17 million;

·         Inevitable and irreversible damage to the Heath and its wildlife.

The City’s rationale for these works involves a dubious interpretation of the law.  It refers to a computer model of a 1 in 400,000 year “probable maximum flood” and works that would “virtually eliminate” the risk of dam collapse in the event of this flood.  The works would contravene the Hampstead Heath Act of 1871 which requires that Hampstead Heath be preserved in its “natural aspect and state”.

The City became custodian of the Heath in 1989.  It is now making a planning application to Camden Council to carry out the proposed works.  You can also help in other ways:

·         Details of the planning application and your opportunity to object directly to Camden Council can be found here <http://planningrecords.camden.gov.uk/Northgate/PlanningExplorer17/Generic/StdDetails.aspx?PT=Planning%20Applications%20On-Line&/PlanningPK.xml&PARAM0=389049&XSLT=/Northgate/PlanningExplorer17/SiteFiles/Skins/Camden/xslt/PL/PLDetails.xslt&FT=Planning%20Application%20Details&PUBLIC=Y&XMLSIDE=/Northgate/PlanningExplorer17/SiteFiles/Skins/Camden/Menus/PL.xml&DAURI=PLANNING> .

·         Donations towards legal costs by the Heath & Hampstead Society (a charity) to apply for a judicial review can be made here <http://www.damnonsense.org.uk/> .

·         Details of the DamNonsense campaign and alternative proposals to the works can be found at here <http://www.damnonsense.org.uk/> and here <https://twitter.com/DamNonsense> ).

Please sign this petition <https://you.38degrees.org.uk/p/damnonsense> and forward the details to your friends, family, colleagues, colleges, trade unions, faith groups and anyone else you can think of!

Building the dam and destroying the ponds is a terrible idea! Not only will wild life suffer but so will the people who use it! The ladies pond is a sanctuary from the city. Having recently re-discovered the ponds, I escape from the pressures of life with a dip in the pond every week. It's one of the best things London has to offer, it keeps Londoners in touch with nature and keeps me from feeling suffocated by the pressures at work. I don't know what I will do with out them. The idea of destroying them to make way for a dam is sickening. Im sick of London being massacred by pointless new developments! The community sustained and created by the ponds being present must be preserved! It's one of the few precious and authentic things London has left. Please DO NOT TURN LONDON INTO DUBAI!
